Heart Christian Academy
"Experience the flexibility of homeschooling combined with the structure of a small classroom setting where our students learn and play together.
Heart is a hybrid homeschooling program "where students spend two days of each week in grade-level classes at one of our campus locations. Using Heart Christian Academy’s curriculum lists, the mentor teacher for each grade creates lesson plans for use both at home and on campus. These tools give parents the confidence to act as their children's primary instructor, teaching at home the other three days of the week. In this unique program, the parent-teacher and the on-campus mentor teacher work as a team to provide a multi-faceted learning experience.
Our purpose is to guide and support parents in their journey to educate and grow their children in the Lord. Heart offers a successful Christ-centered homeschool model and community that produces well-educated young people who are equipped to be used by God. Our unique program provides parents with tools and guidance to teach their children and train them to take increasing responsibility over their academic progress.
Our mission is to build an educational system which fosters both spiritual growth and academic excellence. We desire to come alongside parents in their effort to disciple and educate their children at home. Our parents and staff work together to choose a distinctive curriculum, rich in both Christian worldview and solid scholastic emphasis. We hope to inspire students to become godly leaders in their home, church, community and workplace."

Forge
"Forge School is a homeschool. We do not follow any curriculum that is distributed by others. We create our own experience and curriculum 100% in-house. We do not use grades, but we use a proficiency scale of Stuck, Foundational, Strive, Thrive and Mastery. When a learner leaves Forge to attend college, participate in an internship or apprenticeship or start their own business, their collateral will be a portfolio. A demonstration of their body of work.
We have a max of 20 learners and are normally between 14-17 attendees. Space is limited simply by our property and structures. The small size also allows a teacher ratio of 1:5ish.
Traditional homeschoolers can participate in the Forge experience in a couple of ways:
First, they can attend Forge full time. We operate 5 days a week, year round and go from 9-3. We have found that we are an excellent option for those middle and high school homeschoolers that are seeking/craving a more social experience.
A full time Forge learner participates in our 4 studios (Art & New Media, Tech, Build and Outdoor Leadership). They also participate in math, The Art of Storytelling (Humanities) and strength and conditioning. Our mornings normally consist of cycling through math, The Art of Storytelling and strength and conditioning and the learners move into studio work in the afternoons. Normally the students get to choose their studio based on what has sparked their interest. These afternoon studios vary in duration. Some are 6 weeks in duration and some go longer. Just depends on the complexity of the project.
The second option is for a homeschooler to participate in an afternoon studio from 1-3. It may be that if there was interest, a learner could participate in a M/W/F studio and a T/Th studio as well. They are usually different on those days. Pricing will depend on the duration of the studio project as well as what they are working on. I have to pay the “expert-in-residence” for their time and also for any project materials.
These studios run from mid-August through end of May.
The Mechanical Design project we are offering this spring is 16 weeks in duration, two afternoons a week for 4 hours a week and being taught by a professional engineer and teacher. The cost of that is $50 a day. Many times the studios run later as the students get into what they are doing.
Here is a bit on our 3 Learning Guides:
The Learning Guide for the Tech Studio is Erich Simon. He is a certified environmental and civil engineer, has an advanced degree in mathematics and went on to get his masters in education. He was teaching math and tech at Bend High (before that a private school in Portland) and was not happy in public school. He is thrilled to be here and is teaching math, 2D and 3D printing, coding, robotics and mechanical design.
Our Art & New Media studio is run by Paul Ruiz. Paul has an MFA and went on to become a digital film professional in the entertainment industry and was most recently at CBS and worked on many of the Avenger films doing all the digital animation. He is crazy talented and is teaching all things Adobe Creative, film, videography, traditional art, editing and everything in between. He was also a professional soccer player and is currently a youth soccer coach for the FC Timbers.
Our Build Studio is run by experts-in-residence and we now have a master carpenter guiding the students through the renovation of a used horse trailer for 3 Sisters Equine Refuge and it will become a retail space for them to sell swag out of and take to Central Oregon equine events. We also have a certified educator that happens to be a master boat builder leading the kids through building a wooden kayak from scratch.
Our Outdoor Leadership studio is run by Zack Henry. Zack was a senior field guide for Evoke Wilderness Programs and led adolescents and teens on months long wilderness experiences and he is also a professional river guide. He went back to get his teaching degree and was a middle school teacher at Obsidian middle school in Redmond for 4 years and was miserable. He has enjoyed “unschooling” himself in the ways of public education. Our Outdoor Leadership program goes beyond learning survival skills. It is more about becoming someone that not only can survive if caught in compromised circumstances, but understands the natural world around them. They will also go on over night adventures - backpacking in summer and winter, etc.
We also have a woman who is our expert-in-residence for our garment design project. The students have been learning about the outdoor apparel industry, going on field trips to BlackStrap, Rugged Threads, OSU Cascades Outdoor program, SY Designs. They are learning about pattern design, making patterns, creating patterns for hats, learning sewing skills and will then expand into making a specific garment for the outdoor industry."
